A lot of people have musculoskeletal pain due to their inactive life-style, poor posture and sitting too long. The most common complaints include low back, back or neck pain and 80 % of people have such a pain at least once in life. The reasons for temporary loss of work ability and early disability include primarily degenerative spinal diseases. Manual therapy deals with the diagnosis and therapy of reversible dysfunctions of the support structure and locomotive system of the body (spine, limb joints or muscles). It is a system of manual therapeutic interventions and special techniques based on osteopathy and chiropractic medicine. The techniques have been improved by doctors creating their scientific foundation. Reduced or enhanced mobility of the joints indicate the dysfunctions of the support structure and locomotive system of the body. Manual medicine is applied for the reduced mobility of the joints or vertebra to which rigid and painful muscles are associated. The aims of treatment is to restore the spinal and limb movement dynamics, their original stability through improving the disability of the joints, muscle relaxation or strengthening as needed for pain relief or to ease pain. A treatment is based on a thorough physical examination where the movement of all the vertebra and limb joints is analyzed and the state of the muscles is assessed so the first examination and treatment can last even one hour. The information about the results of the imaging tests (x-ray, CT scan or MRI scan) is also important. Manual therapy can be an effective alternative to conventional therapies for low back, back or neck pain, limb pain or headache caused by neck problems. In most cases, the complaints can be reduced much sooner than with long physiotherapy or balneotherapy treatments. Also, duration of medication can be shortened. In most cases, the complaints are reduced after the first treatment and in general, three or four treatments are needed for a considerable improvement. Unfortunately, no significant improvement can be expected using this method for excessive wear on the joints in old age. It is important to emphasize that contrary to osteopathic activity, which anyone can “learn” and apply after doing a course of a few days without having a basic qualification in healthcare, manual therapy can be carried out by a doctor only after attending a special two-year course and passing an exam at Semmelweis University.
