Over the past 15 years, the number of people with diabetes has been rapidly increasing, now affecting 10% of the population. It is often challenging to navigate what we can and cannot eat. Dr. Réka Nagy, a specialist in diabetology and internal medicine, is here to help.
At Medolis Medical Center, Dr. Réka Nagy believes that the main causes of diabetes in Hungary are overweight and stress. According to her, type 2 diabetes can often be managed without medication through proper diet and exercise.
How Should We Eat?
- Follow a 160-200g carbohydrate diet
- Eat 5-6 meals a day to maintain stable blood sugar levels
- Choose high-fiber, complex carbohydrates such as whole grains and vegetables
- Shop consciously to support a healthy diet
- Learn to count carbohydrates
We should also change our cooking techniques. Whenever possible, steam vegetables instead of frying them in excessive oil or fat.
What Can We Eat?
Refined flour and sugar should be avoided, while whole grain baked goods can be consumed in controlled amounts.
Poultry and fish should be preferred, while red and fatty meats should be avoided.
It is recommended to consume nuts and seeds, as they are rich in nutrients and contain protein.
